Not sure about the drummer, either, heh, especially not when they're zooming in one the kick :P
Anyway, Kim's looking as beautiful as ever and is doing a pretty OK job here, to be honest. 7 out of 10, I'd say.”

The german band gave a real nice treatment of the song, slow tempo with lots of guitar, they even changed a bit the lyrics not to make it too over-dramatic. And the male vocal gives a new insight. It's really good, I highly recommend it !”

Well, you ll tell me, who doesn t actually... Dusty is kind of your predecessor in the history of music, in my opinion. Sixties girls... So my correction is the song I want to dedicate to you. It s actually number 10, Goin' back" by the great Dusty. “Just another Wilde day... Today I picked all of my old vinyl records and among them is standing proudly a KW collection! Still the same amazing feeling touching, watching, caressing the "Catch Can" and "Kim Wilde Teases & Dares" in a grand format. Still that strange affair in my heart, that miss... I started a good and sereine year. I decided to make peace with what I can for now, and music is, just like love. It can move or just be. And miss Wilde s music has followed my ups and down, my deaths, my rebirths, my happiness and my saddness, ô Wendy... To my father who cynically told me that I would forget her quickly, I say now, "you ve never been so wrong, dad. But I make peace with you." Forgiving the ones who ve hurting badly where it still hurts, is a way to happiness. If Kim s music could speak, then she would say how injustice can make you stronger, in the end. I ve been looking for myself in so many cages, so many wrong ways. I felt like nobody was standing there to give me the right examples, so I had to find out for myself. And now, even if I ll never end looking and running for it, I can say that I like what I see. It s concrete and it s been a long way. Today, like a buddhist, I threw away so many souvenirs. They ll be lighter in my heart than hardly living the proof of time and slowly dying under the dust of time. So many things I threw away and now I feel good! But through that process, Kim s records are closer to me for more. It s all about keeping the essential ;-)
Throwing things away is the best thing to do to go further, but remembering them is the sense of life. Wow! I hope I don t sound like a preacher! But anyway, I m certainly writing it all for myself. Because through that "catching me as I can process", the K experience remains 1 of my main inspirations. And now, enjoying the calm inside of me, I want to dedicate the number 12 of Neil s CD from the Pet Shop Boys "Back to mine" collection, to you Kim.
Remembering you remains 1 of the sweetest sensations darling and just like love, I ll always be sent back to you.
And that story, only Kim lovers can understand. If you read this, dear lady Wilde, I would like you to know how much I love you.

Kim in my heart forever. And... what about that mission darling? That mission of love, remember? Are you ready to jump for more??? To sing it out again with the brilliance of your maturity????

I ll be there, screaming for you, like in the old days!”

“Well, chart positions and airplay never meant that much to me, really. Much of what I often listen to wouldn't show up in the charts anyway. As for airplay, it's obvoiusly an important way for an artist to be promoted. However, more often than not what I tend to hear on the radio are radio edits of songs that doesn't have to be the strongest/most interesting tracks on an album. Radio is basically mainstream, meant to appeal to a large number of listeners - yet I usually find that the real gems are hidden somewhere among the tracks on an album or included as a b-side on some single. There are always exceptions though, of course.”

Thanx! Most of Kim's music has been very personal to me, but Close really struck a chord. Perhaps too much. As far as "Hey, Mister Heartache" goes, it is a good dance song, but the poppier stuff was a strong suit there. And, yes, I agree about airplay here. Where I live, I can't get anybody to listen to Kim Wilde because she doesn't get played on the radio--just "Keep Me Hanging On"(Give me a break!) It is very frustrating to be American and deal with people who say that somebody can't be any good if THEY never heard of them. LOL, please! The best music never gets airplay in this country, or else it has 15 minutes here. I have always regretted Kim's miniscule success here, having been a fan for 23 years, but I never let fashion dictate my taste. That's what's so nice about Kim Wilde fans; they are generally as unique as fingerprints, open minded, and this is a great reflection on the performer herself. Kim is something special, and we are priviledged enough to understand that! ”

“Some things words or analysis just can t explain, they are meant to stay mysteries and it s perfect that way. The condition of a "Kim Wilde fan" can be very special and we all know what it can feel like for each others here. When I read Andy s comments on "Close", which was and brillianty remained a big rush of emotions for him, I thought "Wow! Does she really know what she made of our summer '88?". I mean, I would be bored writing again why "Close" is such a special record for me, but it is. My '88 summer of love was sung by her. On her music, I felt that my capacity of loving was huge, and maybe even more... By that time, I didn t even think if there was someone else feeling the same as I in the world. It was my experience and it shone brightly in the mediterrean sky. Kim and her european soul got under my skin while I was in the process of descovering what I had only dreamt about until then. Discovering love on "Close" was something magiK and very romantiK (even if the guy was a big muthafolker and should never have given myself in a natural way to that stranger. Love was a no, but I had kept the best for myself!). So when I read some comments on that record or Catch As Catch Can too, I feel something of a "cosmiK connection". Well, let s call it a "CosKim connection" ;-)
Only for that reason, it s good to come here to read some of you s. By the way, have a great new year WS, James, Lisa... and the others I appreciate!

“@AndyUSA: I think you're right when you say the "Close" is the album that is "most together" and that is why I chose that as my favourite too. I love all the songs, also "Mr. Hearache" which is one of my alltime favourite singles, and "Close" means a lot to me because of the time and place I was in in 1988. Brings back so many memories and old feelings and I must go home and listen to it this weekend. Again and again like in the good old days, when Kim Wilde was THE hottest female star in Denmark. There was no Madonna that year and still no Kylie fever in Denmark anyway. "Close" was the 6th best selling album in Denmark in 1988, only beaten by 3 Danish albums, Tracy Chapman and Bruce Springsteen. And she did outshine them in the singles chart. It was a great time for every Kim Wilde fan I think. ”

But still a def hit with me. I would have made it a B side to the "You Came" single.

“Schoolgirl's thoughts on Close:

"Close is a highly personal and painful album for me, and has been for the last 18 years."

It is an intensely painful record. It is just as haunting as nearly 18 years to its release.

The album starts at track 2 - "Hey Mr. Heartache" is an ok song but clearly does not belong on the record.

This is not a singles orientated album - while it soared at the top of my charts for nearly 52 weeks - my friends cringed because they knew I had come of an intense 3 year love affair. It is an extremely personal album. Tho it is kind of funny it generated 3 top tens in the UK.

To your point however:

Nearly 18 years later (and that first love has way been over), Close still strikes a very deep personal chord!

It is a very deep album - I will love Kim always for putting this record out.

Even if she had to put "Hey Mr Heartache" on it lmao.

“Wow, I am 38 - so much has happened in my life, and I am sure so much in Kim's. I still love her as an artist.

Of course I remember her first single and album here in the good old USA. For sake, she could not get airplay with "Kid's in America" in NYC lol - when all the kids loved the song.

I got the album and was very impressed - very good airplay ensued with "Chequered Love" on MTV - but it was obvious the airwaves (radio) were paved with payola - hence the single flopped. Things really have not much changed on American airwaves as far as this is concerned.

I bought Kim's "Select" album on vinyl. It was only in the murky "import" section of the record store. Kim had two back to back #1 albums on the Andy charts. Having a lot of friends, I promoted her well.

I was very into what we called in NYC, the "new wave" scene. It was supposed to be an outlet of creative talent that did not get the airplay it deserved. However, that was a lie.

People became so caught up in the newly created click, someone like Kim was just "too pop." Laughing my ass off, she was not getting any airplay at all in the USA - it was sad.

"Teases and Dares" spawned 4 #1 singles on the Andy charts - "The Touch" "Fit In", "Janine", and "Bladerunner."

I tried to promote her, but noone was hearing it. I had some cool friends that kept an open ear :) but people always seemed controlled by what radio feeds them.

I still listened to my Kim albums the next few years, and I played her to all of my friends and family.

One thing that always struck me was this - everyone of those listeners (and they were cool and listened) imagined she was doing very well and selling records. They thought she was still a hit. But, her publicist could not BUY airplay if their life dependeded on it. 1 and 1 did not make two, and I realized that nothing in the music industry had ever changed.

In 1986, I again purchased Kim's new album, "Another Step" - and you guessed it - in the import section. The dark little murky place in the store.

I bought the record with no expectations (her airplay was absolutely nonexistent), and with this album I became a huge fan.

I laughed at all of her critics. She was never quite cool enough to be "new wave" and never quite pop enough to be "Pop." I realized after all, she was Kim - just Kim Wilde.

"You Keep Me Hanging On" was spun so hard on USA radio, I could care less about the success. I was happy for Kim - but I saw through the bullshit.

On an album with so many possible great follow ups to the first single, "Say You Really Want Me" was released and of course it flopped.

The album spawned 5 #1 singles on the Andy charts including the #1 single of the year, "Don't Say Nothings Changed."

By the time Kim released "Close" in 1988 life had moved on - I was 21 years old. I had seen the first single doing well on the UK charts and quickly snapped it up.

The first single was a smash club hit (trust me - I was 21 lol), and again I saw the single get no airplay. It's airplay was hugely manipulated on USA radio.

I thought the mostly co-penned Kim album was her finest momemt. In fact, that was my review of the album upon 20+ listens. It was named "Close" for I felt she was on a mission to get even better as a writer and performer.

I never knew I was to eat the words in my review. "Close" was as close as Kim (doing it her own way) would ever get. The next few albums have been good, Kim has had many more #1 singles with me.

Now I say, this woman is so talented (she is the full package). No critic - no fad - nothing is going to stop her from making good records. And this is an Andy quote, "Kim may never be the "in" fad, but she will always be in!"

I love you Kim and you have always strived for better. When you were chart taboo, you just defied the nonsense.

I love all of you Kim fans as well :)

Andy

“I didn't care about the voice, I cared about the performance, Kim should have planned her moves man!!! Jeeeezzz is it her best shape ever? Great, whatever she rocked at a few higher points, the parts that were expected to be "high" and "fun".

Sure, ok, I must say she rocked, but yo, she doesn't have that spark she used to have, and that either because she's tired there or not in the mood... or maybe even something else, must ask her about that.

I find the performance, which I rated 4 on 10, lame a little, WHAT THE... the outfit looked good on Kim, from my POV. But the band, wow, they just make Kim look bad.

Did anyone take a good look on it? The band was like, "Yo, I'm old, so, leave it alone, it's a good song, I'm ok I'm like, y'know, feelin' weird with this girl singing".

Corrupted also, the audience was a great, I mean, good crowd, very good, I liked the part when they were singing, hehe, was fun.

The only "problem" was the performance, other than that, the song was good, and the band kinda made a few, very, silent faces at themselves, like nothing's going on.

So there, 4 on 10 for Kim, and, maybe a good 9 on 10 for the crowd, if it wasn't for them Kim would not be the "alive" way she somehow is now, although. With a little bigger crowd it would be somehting else, hehehe... ”

“Thanx again, Pierre! I have never seen this video before. Being American, I have never seen the majority of her vids before until you provided this wonderful website for us! Leave Kim's hair alone, guys, because I used to wear my hair exactly like that--even that color for a while. She is so beautiful in this video, and the rain accentuates the lyrics. This has always been among my favorite songs by her, along with "Love's a No." Close is a highly personal and painful album for me, and has been for the last 18 years. That is why it is her best album, but not my favorite of them--if that makes sense. An album cannot be so highly sensitive to an individual that it hurts to the core, or you are not being fair to the artist, which is why my fave is Now and Forever. That's why I wish Mary Fahl would come out with a friggin' sophomore solo album too already! Too personal! My condolences to your friend/relative (?), Pierre, because I know what a failed love affair can do to your life. Enough of this gloom! Happy New Year to everyone here and your families. May it be the best of all, and your dreams realized! ”
