There was one thing that the article omitted, I felt. Some control freaks are absolute sadists, and arrogant, and maybe there is no heart there we can reach. Don't react - that's what they want. And if it's a harassment over the phone, change the number. Yes, sadists they are. They love it when people are hurting, and they go on using and abusing.”

“Mike and James,
I don't think Kim would be bothered about us knowing if she has tinnitus.
James ,Otitis is different,I know its very painful and bad in the cold and wet.
Tinnitus is more permanent and harmful in that it can send you crazy if you have it 24/7.
I get it very rarely, usually in the midddle of the night.I wake up thinking there is a fire alarm or something going off.
I then realise it is inside my head, but for safety ,wake my girl and ask her to confirm it is not external.
Then I go back to sleep and it is usually gone in the morning.
To have it all the time would send me mad I think.
Kim never once told me she had ear problems, just the same as every singer I have ever worked with said to the band, turn down you're too loud,I can't hear myself.
One major reason why I work alone now, singers want to please themselves all the time. Now ,I can do as I wish and nobody can tell me otherwise.
I am going to get my ears blown off tonight as I am rehearsing my band for the album I am producing in January.
Hipfandango will be justifiably huge next year.”

“Oh, I've just spotted James' post after posting mine. We must have posted at the same time almost. I'll rely on your discretion where you can answer by email if you like. SelectMike

I think SelectMike -we should not try to find out who has ear problem...It should stay (unknown) maybe. Whatever or whoever song is about lets just be -What do u think? I always suffered from ear problem but not Tinnitus, but Otis its when its very very cold or when you dive in deep water you get right away ear infection, i couldn't swim like all the others -i mean i could but could not dive inside of deep water since water is a No no for my ears :) and if were Big celebrity i wouldnt want people talk about it.”
Byrdman

“I'm glad you concur.
I hate situations like that, but I try not to be the victim.
Kim always said about all the bands I was in,TURN DOWN.
It is the classic case of the highly paid musicians wanting to show how good they are. This often manifests itself through sheer decibel volume.
Its like,me.me .me see me like a puppy crying for attention.
Of course with a bit of sagacity you learn to turn the volume down.
It sounds great to the band, but the poor singer cannot hear themselves sing.As it is mainly about the singer that is an insane situation.
Mind you Marty, when at the helm, never once asked the band to turn down.

“Oh, thanks for that Dave. There's a good acronym for fear - False Evidence Appearing Real. It's amazing, for example, how many people who have had panic attacks have thought they were dying, when in fact, they were not.
And the fear of death itself is taken away by drawing close to God anyway. Prayer will give us the strength when we weaken on this. We all have moments of lack of faith, and the Scripture says that that is the sin that easily entangles us. So theft, lying etc the obvious wrongdoings, but a lack of faith too. It's an insult to God if we don't trust Him. We are trying to rely on ourselves only.

"Return to me and I will return to you." His promise to us. And another good one, "He that is faithful in little things is faithful also in much."

“mike: yes we've nothing to fear but fear itself.
that interview you did with me had a line in it that you wrote : courage over fear,i thought it was very apt so i decided to title the interview using those 3 words.
even as i sit here now im worrying about an impending meeting with my staff tomorrow and thinking of worst case scenarios.
theres that verse from the bible which says dont worry about tomorrow as tomorrow as enough worries of it's own
you'd think after 25 years of reading it i'd do what it says but no,i never learn.it also says the man who reads the word of God and doesnt put it into practice is like a man who looks in a mirror and then instantly forgets what he looks like.
other believers tell me "dont worry about things and let go"...but do i do it? no i carry on.please pray for me mike....i need it!

SelectMike

“lisa: yes i know what you mean, the few seconds before a band comes on stage and all the lights are down, its amazing.
imagine what that must be like for a singer or musician,so much adrenalin!
i used to suffer from very bad stage fright years ago.it was teriible and that was only in front of a few hundred people.it got to the stage where i just dreaded it when the weekend came around and i had to travel over to yorkshire to play in clubs.
then one day we were about to go on stage (i was crapping myself as usual!) and the club owner came in to the dressing room and asked us if we minded if he opened the fire door behind my drum kit because the room was so hot (there was water literally dripping down the walls!) we said no we didint mind.
when i went on stage i felt so different knowing i had an open door behind me,it was very strange.i didnt feel any nerves what so ever
and so the next gig we did i asked if i could open a door when we were on stage (this time it was at the side) and it worked again!...i didnt feel frightened anymore.
i did this whenever the venues permitted me to do it and even when they refused to do it.i used to stare at the door and imagined it was open during the gig. ”

“Of course, Cal, if you want to think that the God of the Bible is mythical because you are not sure?

I will bring Kim into this. There's an interview where she states that she believes in God, but is confused by religion. I totally understand this. Though a very happy woman now, she fears the future, the harm to the planet, fear of death also, she has dreams which have fears in them, so my hope for her is similar to my hope for you. Don't look for incontrovertible proof for you won't find that, but examine the evidence, and hopefully, one day, you and Kim and others can find a faith, and therefore hope and confidence in the future.”

The above link was my point, Cal, as it defeats the idea of millions of years being involved. It's a quick event.

May I suggest too that the Gods you mention are mythical, and limited, whereas the God of the Bible, more than Abrahamic, as Jesus revealed more of His Divine nature is unlimited and infinite in power.

Anyway, I'm pleased you don't have a closed mind on the subject.”
Lisa

“I love witnessing the nervous energy before the performance, the exciting light extravaganza, and fabulous stage reveal! The first verse Kim sings is quite challenging, as the notes are high which demonstrates that Kim is a true live performer. Also, the tone of Kim's voice is very cool, clear and pleasant on the year. It's a nice dance / gospel influenced song.

Lastly, Kim looks so fashionable and effortlessly cool in leather here, whereas on others it can look extremely dated, cheesy or skanky.

Lastly, I love the way the top ties up from behind. It essentuates Kim's beautiful back and Monroe wavy hair.”

“Caro: Hmm, well I am not sure about "fed up with God" though. The Abrahemic God and his at times fervent followers? Yes, sometimes - but the divine is much more than the Abrahemic God and no, in that sense I am not fed up. When you're mentioning virtues, such as honesty and so forth, that's not typically Christian ones though. All - yes all - of these fundamental values have existed no matter what society we've lived in or what god we've worshipped. In some way or another, Tezcatlipoca, Thor, Dana, and so forth all fulfilled a very real need. Also remember that some virtues can be tinted by the culture in question - compare European "honour" with Japanese "honour" for instance. In the latter case, the honour was dictated by the warrior code, Bushido, not by something explicitly religious.”

“Steve: I'm not sure, at this time, that this is the place for me to discuss the paranormal stuff I've experienced. For one, some of them are hard to believe if you weren't there - I can't blame anyone for that, because that's pretty much how I would react. I've seen, felt and heard some very, very strange stuff, yet I am still being very critical of some of these "ghost busters" shows and so forth that you'll see on the telly nowadays.
UFO's, what are they? Well, Unidentified Flying Objects, for starters, which would apply to a great many things ;) But yes, the whole UFO deal has been handled in a strange manner in many countries, where obviously strange phenomena have been dismissed in strange manners. In some - perhaps even most - cases, it might have got something to do with classified experiments, but that'd hardly explain all of it. I think that the greatest problem here is the attitude of the academics, where many of them are dismissing these phenomena off-hand and even ridicule collegues that don't. In some cases, it's even driven UFO-interested scientist to commit suicide. School yard bullying, that is.”
Calanor
wrote

“Mike: As for me not being an atheist, I feel that's part of the - hopefully - open-minded view of life that I've got. Atheism would mean that I a stating that there is no God - well, rather no divine being, be it God or whatever. Personally, I do not know that - I've experienced things that many might label as "spiritual" and they might have been religious in a sense, but did they prove the existance of an Abrahemic God? No. They didn't prove the existance of any kind of god (or demon), though they might at times have _hinted_ at it. So, to reiterate myself, I take on an agnostic view - I am not biased by any religion's philosophy per se, I consider the divine a possibility, but I cannot say "boo or bah" as they say over here in Sweden.

As for your talk about fossils, I've actually held an interest in paleontology for the most of my life (starting with the unoriginal boyhood fascination with dinos..). I think that you've misunderstood what a fossil is - it's not a biological specimen that's survived millions of years, it's an imprint of it. A calcination (or other) of what was - in some very, extreme cases, we've actually got some tiny pieces of the actual creature, but usually it's usually a shadowplay, somewhat like when you leave your handprints in gypsum.

You're mentioning the complex structure of the DNA, and that it thus must have been designed by God. Perhaps. I quite honestly do not dismiss the idea that a higher power might be in play - as you with some relief recognised earlier, I am not a plain atheist. However, for starters, that would not suggest WHAT higher power we might be dealing with - perhaps the quite... aggressive Aztec god Huitzilopochtli designed the DNA? :P The hint of the divine in nature does not automatically that one dogma is superior to the other.”

Calm down, calm dowm :D As I said, I haven't actually watched Jeanne d'Arc and while "the boss" were "giving her one", that wasn't my main point. It's just that I'm not all that sure about Milla's acting capabilities :) And well, I am Swedish of a 1970 vintage, remember. Quite unavoidable then for me to avoid ABBA - especially during new year's eve, when I play Happy New Year ten times while getting ready to leave, and then have to endure the same song 50 times during the night because Swedish girls apparently can't comprehend a few minutes during new years eve without ABBA.

Your point illustrates why God is the judge for even in a last minute conversion, God would know the difference between a good heart condition, and hypocrisy where the person is not really sorry, but hopes to escape judgement the last minute. The one by Jesus' side was clearly and truly repentant. Thanks to Karina too for rwspecting my view, but realise that it is not my view really, but the view of someone far higher than me. And I simply and humbly submit to that.

I find when reading or hearing disrespect of the Bible by some Scientists or the like, invariably, there is arrogance and mockery and therefore twisted logic, whereas, the true Christian respects where someone is coming from, and helps that one with kindness and love to find the truth of things that make for a meaningful life. That is the secret is humbly submitting to God and asking to be shown the way.”

“great words mike and kaz
i must mention though mike about the part about the athiest on the deathbed, one of the thieves on the cross long with jesus was saved as he was dying
i have also witnessed something like this first hand: abt 25 years ago me and some friends were walking round the streets and came across a guy who was hooked on glue sniffing.he was so bad that he had gone crazy and used to dance in the middle of the street and people used to mock him.when we found him he was sat outside a church door crying and asking for the vicar he was in a bad way so we phoned the ambulance and prayed with him while we waited.the staff at the hospital said the substance abuse had affected his mind and it wasnt looking good.we stayed till he was stable and left.we prayed all that week.we then lost touch with him.
10 years later i was walking down the street when a man in a suit stopped me.he said "hey remember me?" i said "no sorry" he explained that he was that guy who was in the church doorway! he remembered us taking him to hospital and after that recovering in hospital.he said "i cried out God that day and you came"
i couldnt believe what i was seeing he looked so different.he wore an expensive suit and said he was now an insurance salesman.
btw mike i love reading your posts on theology i wish i had your knowledge. ”

“Love is certainly the key to give people, but one must still decide on whose standards to follow. When God shows that inanimate idols are man made and therefore stupid to put our trust in them, Prayer to them would get us nowhere. But as "God is love", the source of all love, it makes sense therefore to follow His standard. When times are rough, we need a higher power to pray to for help, and to show Him gratitude for His love. The Bible shows why the world is in a fallen condition, and as Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."

So, it is important to find a basis for belief for our lives depend on it. "Keep proving whether you are in the faith, keep proving who you yourselves are." The wisdom in the Bible is without parallel.

And as an afterthought, many an atheist on his deathbed suddenly wants to pray to God. Many people learn too late. Far too late!!

We thank our mothers for the food they put on the table. What about thanking God without whom there would be no mothers, or any food? We live in a largely selfish and ungrateful society, and it is no surprise to me that so called experts will go on endlessly trying to discredit God and the Bible so that they can live their lives their own way and indeed idolise themselves, but a thinking man looking through all that kind of literature realises such flaws in their logic. "The man that says there is no God is a fool", the Bible says. That should make us think, and hopefully take a wise course after that. ”

“Cal,these days I'm reading a book by Sister Emmanuelle called Mon Testament Spirituel(My Spiritual Testament)that I recommend you really. She was very open minded and always showed the right side of the religion, she was very modern in her conception of the Church, she was funny till her death.I can't resume the book,it's too rich(and mostly I don't have the English vocabulary just like to take part to the conversation you all did below) but you don't need to be a believer to read it,it's mostly about humanity, she talks about several things you all said below.Just a few words Sister Emmanuelle wants to say:Jesus'aim was not that he wanted humans to have the Faith, his desire was "Love each others".Sister Emmanuelle just says we all can learn to look at the others with kindness, respect, friendship;why wanting to be thought important figures?she says refering to Marie' s humility,Angels,Jesus.Religion is love, gift, sharing. It doesn't matter you believe in a religion or not Cal,whatever this religion can be,the most important is the way you behave everyday with people you know or don't know.
I think I sometimes read people saying they're fed up with God,that they don't want to believe anymore cos they live or see horrible things:religion can only help you to succeed in accepting some things. Some persons who live personal dramas(the lost of a child for example),first they think their lives are over then with time, they learn to look around them and see that other people who suffer need their help,so they learn to pass beyond their own sufferings, to only see the help and the goodness they can give to the other persons.
Steve talked about Jeanne d'Arc's honesty, she died for that(and because of others' dishonesty),it's something we all should learn,it's a rare value.Sometimes I feel like the cheaters, the liars, are the ones who win,and that the honest is thought to be stupid.Such a shame.I think lies are really dishonesty,it makes me very sad when someone lies to me,the sadest is when the person who lies to me doesn't realize that I know she/he is lying to me.I'm angry with my girls when they lie to me even if they do about little thngs. ”

“Steve, I'm not dismissing what you saw and your view on it. I was just giving possibilities generally on what people see.

Your other question: note the seventh day, it didn't close like the other days, so each creative day wouldn't be 24 hours long.
There is no scripture that says, "and there came to be evening, and there came to be morning, a seventh day", so that rest day is still continuing now and continues to the close of Christ's millennial reign coming later.

The account about everything being after its kind rules out evolution, and more than that, man was said to be created in God's image thus separating him from the animals. Only mankind has a need to worship someone, to love in the fullest sense, and has a conscience about right and wrong. It figures, then, that God put that there.

Fossils are preserved so fast which makes strong evidence for the Flood. Millions of years wouldn't help as the more time there is, decay, rotting by bacteria, eating by other animals etc, we wouldn't have such a well preserved specimen. A huge catastrophic event took place therefore, and we have seen in recent times Rock strata altering in a very short time. So the idea of fossil evidence proving evolution falls flat - the more time goes by, things wind down, not get better.

Apart from Atheism being the excuse used for Science, so therefore it is not true Science - the fact remains that everything made must have a designer. The DNA has to have all its amino acids left handed for life, in the right order, and so systems have to be a complete concept rather than chance over time. That's the real Science of it, but many don't like the idea of being accountable to God, so they ignore Him, and indeed sense.

DNA is extraordinarily complex code, and someone must have coded it.

Evolutionists constantly change their minds on the subject, and at the end of the day it is still a theory that doesn't have the convincing evidence that believing in God does. The trouble is the Church has turned many a person away from the Bible because they assume that the Church teaches the Bible completely, but once we realise what the Bible actually says, then there is no need to turn to Evolution to explain things. The Bible is much more rational. The account in Genesis 1 is an ordered, noble and sublime account. Other thoughts cannot compare with it.

Cal: Disillusionment with the Church - yes I buy that, because it bears out what I said earlier that many are corrupting what the Bible says. How could God bless both sides in a war in the same religion? Is God divided? Would Jesus take up arms? Of course not.

The starting point is to study the Bible to prove the religion and not the other way round. So, I am disillusioned with the Church also.

Also I am glad that you didn't say that you were an Atheist. In the vast infinite knowledge that exists, how can an Atheist be sure that there is no God? We only know a tiny fraction of what there is to know.

It is impossible to prove incontrovertibly that God exists, and it could never be proved that he doesn't exist. That's why, the Apostle Paul said, "We are walking by faith, not by sight."

However, the Bible can provide convincing evidence for that Faith. Don't let the Church colour it for you, but examine the Bible and find out who really is following it. Then compare with the other concepts and see for yourself which gives the most meaningful life.”

Well, assuming that I had the chance to learn Arameic before that happened, anyway...
That does not, however, mean that I think that he was "the first and the last" or anything like that. History's boasted a number of prominent holy men, which is perfectly fine, but when the followers of a specific holy man get too influential it often leads to troubles. Wars, persecution and so forth.
Here's another example, by the way - once upon a time Egypt was divided into two parts, where one part favoured the god Osiris, while the other one digged Set. It eventually resulted in a major clash and the Osiris cult turned out to be the victor. For thousands of years thereafter, Set (the loser) was depicted as a mindless, demonic animal, destroying everything in its path and it's only now that we realise that "he" actually was - originally - a very respected deity.”

“Lisa, it's true that men wrote Scripture, as you say, but the central theme that runs throughout and connects 40 writers over 1600 years - well, they said that they were inspired of God, and constantly pointed to Him as the author. That kind of book is really unique. Attempts to do something similar would fail because where else would you get agreement lasting that length of time? The verses connect in myriads of ways, and all the early stuff is pointing to Jesus, who in turn, showed the Jews an even higher thought, which surprised many and even shocked them. The case that he was just another imperfect human and just a good teacher doesn't hold up. His wisdom is even beyond that of Solomon, so when he asked Peter as to who he thought he was, Peter said that you are the Christ, the son of the living God, and after Jesus' death, early Christians faced their death with courage and strong faith.

Regarding Satan, again the Bible view is rational, but there are many ridiculous mythical stories about him.
Mankind, good and bad, bacteria once not known but now is known. It's not farfetched to believe in invisible Spirit Beings, both Good and Bad.

Look upwards at the vast universe. To say that all came by chance is the most irrational thought of all. We have invisible forces, why not invisible Beings?”

i told him to stand under the street lamp to get a better look(by this time our friends caught up to us) i looked at his head and the wound had vanished!...there was an oily substance on his head like olive oil aswell.i got his tissue and wiped it off and,no kidding his skin was like a babies.our mates all had a turn trying to find this wound on his head.we all just stood there stunned then we all went to the takeaway and ordered our food.no one spoke at all we were all in shock.that was 25 years ago.me and lee often talked about that night but whenever our friends saw us they just went silent and would never speak of it mentioned it again ”

The Flood story in the Bible is also straight, and afterwards became superstitious too with distorted and weird fairytale kind of stuff put into it. The ancient culture's view of God is very different to how God is described in the Bible, and the way He wants to be worshipped is also different, since He condemned the ways of the pagan nations, and moreover Jesus quoted from Genesis showing he believed in what that book said.

The Bible is much more rational than the stories that came after. Then there are many prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. There is no way that he could arrange a life to fulfill them all. This suggests strongly that the Bible is indeed the word of God.”

Many scholars accept that the Bible is the oldest religious book, and the occurrences of similar stories in other cultures are quite different to the original, and actually betray the fact that those stories were written later.
The Bible goes back a long way, but it is your right if you don't want to follow it. Each person has to come to their own conclusion as to what to believe having examined all the evidence.

“Mike: As a side-note, consider this when we're talking about religious codes. The Aztecs - their sincere belief was that if you did not spill a certain amount of blood, the Sun would not travel across the sky (well, kind of - the Aztec belief system is extra-ordinarily complex). So, according to their reckoning, they did what was necessary - they were in this sense the good guys. Now, compare this to - for instance - the witch hunt of the 17th century. Women, and to some extent men, were burned alive at the stake, as well as killed and tortured in other imaginative ways - a human sacrifice just like what the Aztecs indulged themselves in. However, when it came to the Aztecs, those who were sacrificed were criminals and war prisoners - in the Christian world at the time, it often was whoever didn't properly fit in.

“Mike: Hmm, I admit that I am taken aback a bit, as actually did not know that you're a believing Christian. However... (and yes, you saw that coming)

The Bible isn't very old, even if you consider the Old Testament - most of it can be traced to various other religions, one of the most pronounced being the Egyptian mythology. That's not all that surprising, considering that the jews did spend a lot of time in Egypt. Hmm, let's consider some Egyptian details - Set becoming "Satan", after basically an Egyptian civil war. Akhenaten's tributes to the Sun, the only and single God - a monoteistic view way before Christianity.

No, I am sorry Mike. I agree with you in almost every case, because I find you a wise and reasonable person. The Bible, however, is not something I'd use as a guidance.”

“Yes I was talking about Christian religion, but even with other religions, non Christian, if they obey the 'you must not murder' command because they feel it is wrong to murder, it's not their sacred text they got it from, but originally from the Bible, so one important way to be peaceable is obviously not to kill, but that precept was already written down in the first sacred text ever written.

At the root of every great teaching is going to be the Bible, and the teachings of Jesus no matter what other religions may think. The wisdom of good living is already written down. And we can see the result in the world when these guidelines are ignored.

To feel superior is wrong anyway as we are supposed to be humble, again in the example of Christ!”

I take it, from your post, that you're thinking in Christian terms when talking about religion, but obviously religion is far more than that. When I spoke about religion being part of our genes, I certainly didn't suggest that a specific religion was just that. "God" takes many forms, and it is the hybris of some religions to assume that their image of "God" is superior to that of others. Christianity, unfortunately, has often displayed that hybris.
Religious leadership, including in the west, has never guaranteed a wise rule. As a species, we often yearn for a "leader". We started out as a pack animal and the biological evolution hasn't been able to keep up with our sociological advances. We're still, in essence, a pack animal yearning for leadership and guidance.”

“The question is Cal, who are we going to trust to make that peace? Without a moral code, without God, we are left with unreliable and largely selfish humanity. The more humans there are making decisions, the worse it gets, and if peace does happen, it will be because they have borrowed an ethic that already exists. So, in some cases, even those who don't follow the Bible are actually obeying some of it. The danger comes with the rest of their invented rules or discarding of rules for life, which brings up that question - which one in the group or maybe Society (the latter even more dangerous due to numbers involved) can we trust, driven as he is by purely human reasoning along with human error?”

Haven't seen the film myself though; some mates of mine felt it wasn't very good, so I never actually bothered to check it out. Perhaps I will though, as several of Besson's films are quite good (one of my all-time faves is "The Big Blue").

Regarding England vs France, yeah it's weird in hindsight, though I guess it all started with a war of succession. That often is an efficient way to turn friendly neighbours into mortal enemies for a long time. I don't believe in Karl, I don't believe in The Si d es, I don't believe in David Layton, I don't believe in Steve, I only believe in me.

years later when i started going to church i understood why people were upset by his comments but in a secular world its very difficult to judge what would be seen as blasphemous.
as a christian i have made and continue to make mistakes and say the wrong things.and its amazing how many people notice when you curse. yet a non christian can talk to another using bad language and neither person thinks twice about what is being said.

“I've never understood at the time the truth of the matter. Either Lennon was being arrogant with that statement, or when he backpedalled after the furore over it, he now claiming that there must be something wrong with people to make the Beatles more popular than Jesus Christ - what was his original motive?

Some light can be shed later as Phil Spector said about himself that he just switches roles to fit an Artist's beliefs, so he could work with George Harrison even though Phil didn't believe in God as George did, and could fit in entirely with John's Anti God attitude. Though Phil did mention that he wished he could believe in God.

The sentimentality of "Imagine" goes too far. Imagining no religion, to a point I can identify with, as so many create war and strife, but a total lack of religion and a Godless Society is very dangerous and would destroy peace altogether.”

“You have to be careful what you say to some women as they pick up a totally unintended implication. "You look great in that dress!" And she says, "What?? I don't look great at other times?"

Solution: more careful language, thus: "As always, you look very beautiful, but you look especially radiant in that dress."

“I had understood Karina.
Dave,be classical in your compliments to women(you know, nice dress, nice new hairdo, etc)if you don't want to make you throw away, and keep these kinds of jokes for your mates,it's a guy stuff.Girls could be as heavy as men if they wanted to but they don't!You know, the first times women are said salacious reflexions by men,we're surprised and shocked, but the next times,we've warned and put our weapons on,we've become stronger and ready to reply on the same way, then it's funny to see disappointment on men's faces when we break the effects of their jokes.”
