Where the hell is the Water On Glass/Boys and Flling Out vids? All right people, 1stly, great video to a killer tune to add to her killer delightfully miserble year of 1982 where people were dying in aeroplanes, in rioting gangs (Action City) or just plain miserable and lonely (Just A Feling, Take Me Tonight). But what's all this crap about where it got? Hello, there IS no reason, apart from back in the 80s the average 45 buyer was stupider than hell and went off a person the next year cos they didn't think they could keep liking them and a newer artist at the same time. If only that shit happened today. One of you smartly mentions the song stands out for a female at the time due to its non-I love you approach, but your memorie's buggered. Hello, the charts were FULL of females eschewing the love song-Kate Bush, Toyah, Stevie Nicks, Hazel O'Connor, Kirsty MacColl, Grace Jones etc. Unlike now in this world of crappily over-feminine couldn't write a proper decentlyric if they tried Madonna, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Gabrielle, Furtado, Knowles, Duffy, Nash, Shaniah Twain, Rhianna-HELLO, IT'S ALL SHIT NOW-yet you no doubt buy it anyway. 10/10 vid for me, Kim, but the song is an even better bet-but then the so should ALWAYS outdo the video, right Madonna/Annie Lennox fans. I might also add here could Cambodia and VFAB not have failed? The former has no chorus, long intro (for a song by a girl) and a totally at-odds with shiny pop storyline approach. And VFAB also piles on the misery. But then we ALL know nothing Kim did EVER reached the right position, don't we? Hell the girl has albums FULL of singles unlike most people, yet sod all get released and nevr hit the top5/top3 No.1 positions they're so clearly made to be in the patheically sexist male dominated 1980s. Maybe if Kim had e female manager, maybe if she took her clothes off and swore and cupped crosses to her cross. Still, 1 slag's desperate journey to stardom is different to a beautiful, talented sweet girl's who's always got to endure accusations of neptotism and nothing to give cos everyone's just decided to ignore and disregard, a fact buoyed up today as she's NEVER on the radio with anything but that bloody Kids song!

Powerful! Awesome lyrics and video tells it all. The end of the video is how the whole world looks at something like this....they can't too hard to face. Wow great video!

I love this song! I think it's one of her best. I especially like the lyrics, the story in the song and it's atmosphere. It was rare for a female pop singer to have a song with serious lyrics back then. I wish I wrote the song... The video is good for 1982 standard. And I too wonder what really happened to the girl with the deputy... But the best is that we're not really told anything, we can only imagine it ourselfs... I've always thought that this song tells us about how a small comunity turn their backs toward a girl just because they're afraid. And keep pretending that she's not among them anymore...

I am so happy for my existence, if not I would never hear this. By the way, about the band, I don't think it should be '80s cherry... I'll see.

I don't know really if I like this clip or not. It really has a strange atmosphere, and Kim looks very hot. But I miss some exciting parts. The scenes with "the mark on ..." and on the beach are quit nice.

Creepy stuff, but so totally cool. I always wondered what the inspiration was behind this song. Anyone know?

Well, I must admit that unlike Cambodia and VFAB, it's the Select epoque vid that I can't recall exactly when I first saw it. Which might suggest that it did not do quite as much an impression on me back then, I suppose. Still, I don't mind the vid, even though I agree with some of your points. As for turning it into an outright horror vid, some might say that the same would apply to e.g. View From a Bridge (and yes, I do love that vid).

Frankly Calanor, I remember being rather disappointed with this video even back in '83. Yes it does tell the story but fails to convey its venenous poetry. Instead we have a litteral illustration of the lyrics (do we need half a minute to explain the verse "Happy with the people she knew"?) and the result is pretty awkward, even for the early 80s. Around the same time Kim Carnes (Voyeur) Annabel Lamb (Riders On The Storm) or even Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse Of The Heart) had videos that were eery and atmospheric. Not only does this one fail on that level but it's so awkward it drags down the song with it instead of enhancing it. I can only dream what an italian horror director like Pupi Avati, or even australian Russell Mulcahy, could have done with it...

OK, kind of wondering why I haven't rated this yet? :) Well, here goes. Not surprisingly, I don't agree with the more sceptic critics here - while some parts of the vid certainly might feel a bit dated now, it was a pretty cool video back in 1982. I do agree that the extras on the beach hardly qualify for an Oscar, but the vid is overall quite OK and tells the story well. And Kimmy is Selectishly gorgeous! ;)

I always liked the song, but the video is kind of bad. Part of the reason is the extras on the beach are such bad actors. A video that tells the story of the song; the only question is: what is this song really about?

C'mon everybody, this video is plain stupid don't you think ? Bad acting, stupid screenplay... and her make-up.. In fact, might as well be a Cure video !! Actually, it's a funny video but I'm not sure Kim is very proud of it...

The scene where they're drinking milkshakes in the diner reminds me of an old Australian mini-drama called the Henderson Kids, co-staring Kylie Minogue.

Once again you express things much better than I'd do! Like Katrien says, it's amazing how Kim looks young and mature at the same time. I love the idea of having both brother and sister being the actors of this mini-film. The masks on the faces of the children remind me of the Japanese "No Theater" and they're quite as impressive. As for the video effects at the end of the clip, they look and feel like David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes video - very early 80's - love it!

I do love this song and video a lot. It's nice the way that the video is telling the story. This is such a hidden classic although I'm not surprised that it wasn't a success as it is a weird song. I love the slow motion bit at the end best.

Great Clip! I like the use of arial shots at the beginning, Kim in white and tragic 80's hairstyles in every direction you look. I normally find clips that tend to tell a story very corney, but this is done very tastefully using lots of symbolizm. I like the way the director of this clip has chosen to use the narrator of this song, Kim to play the part of the abducted child, rather than using a child actor and having Kimmy sing in the background.
